Some lemurs fulfill a true magico-religious function. Their presence in the heart of homes gives them a special status; they come and go between the forest and the village. It is forbidden to hunt, consume, capture, or even touch them. The inhabitants of sacred lemur villages ensure the well-being of these animals and warn anyone who might try to catch them, take them away, or harm them.
