Some Maki have a real magic-religious function. Their presence in the villages gives them a special status, they come and go between the forest and the village. It is forbidden to hunt them, to consume them, to capture them, even to touch them. The inhabitants of the villages with sacred lemurs watch over the well-being of these animals and warn all the people who would like to catch them, take them away or harm them.
